I was recently going through a nice list of Gmail Tips maintained by Jim Barr, it has a lot of useful tips out of which tip 25 tells you how you can create a label named "Unread" which automatically displays all the mails which are not yet read by you (not just in inbox or just in one label, but in your full email account). But when I tried creating such a label gmail didn't allow me, so I tried creating a label named "Unread2" and then tried renaming it to "Unread" that's when I got a message saying "System specific label names are not allowed. Please try another label".

Workaround for this problem at present would be to just type "label:Unread" in your gmail search box and hit enter. This will give you the complete list of emails which you have not read till now.

It would be a lot convenient if Gmail guys add such a link near the system folders / labels (I mean near Inbox, Sent Mail).

and create a saved search for "is:unread". That way you have a "button" on your gmail for viewing all your unread mail

To create a filter to as as "Unread" Folder:

1. Click Create a filter (next to the Search the Web button at the top of any Gmail page).
2. Enter "is:unread" in teh "has words: field; this will be your search criteria.
3. Youll get a warning message, but just click "ok"
4. Select "start it" as your action from the list. These actions will be applied to messages matching your filter criteria in the order in which the actions are listed
5. If you'd like to apply this filter to messages already in Gmail, select the Also apply filter to x conversations below checkbox.
6. Click Create Filter.

now when ever you click on the "starred" label in Gmail, you get all of your unread messages.

Or you could just create a filter which archives all read mail (is:read) immediately. In your inbox only the unread mail remains.

Here's how to have the unread email link on the side!

There's a thing in Gmail labs called "Quick Links"

Enable it and set it up so that it links you to your unread email (done by putting "label:unread" or "is:unread" into the search box.

Thank you! I did install the "Quick Links" from Gmail's lab and it provides this exact functionality. I agree that labels should be more flexible and let you add 'Unread' or at least appear as a folder like 'Stared' does.

Thank you again!

It seems though if you type "label:unread" then drag the URL to your bookmark bar you can kind of get that effect. Maybe even a little more easier than trying to find it on the left.
