Even though Vista on a 32 bit machine will recognise and be able to use both HD DVD and Blue Ray drives it will not support commercial HD movie playback. The reason for this? To quote MS source: The surprising disclosure was made by Senior Program Manager Steve Riley during a presentation on Windows Vista security at Tech.Ed 2006 Sydney today. “Any next-generation high definition content will not play in x32 at all,” said Riley. “This is a decision that the Media Player folks made because there are ...
Microsoft has just published my article about Windows Live Services in MSDN Windows Vista and Microsoft Office Beta Experience Newsletter: In the first days after .NET platform was released it was pretty hard to distinct between the core technology platform and products which had .NET as part of their names. (Can you still remember the names like .NET Passport, SQL Server.NET or Windows .NET Server?). As Microsoft has announced the Windows Live and Office Live few months ago I had the strange déjà ...
Assume that you have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Windows Vista and you have gotten sick and tired of Windows Vista (like myself) and you want to restore the Windows XP bootloader. Now there is an easy way to accomplish this, well actually there are several ways to do this but I will focus on the utility bootsect.exe that you can find on the Windows Vista installation DVD in the folder Boot. About bootsect Bootsect.exe is a Boot Sector Restoration Tool. It updates the master boot code for ...
After you have created a *.wim image file using ImageX you may want to take advantage of the tools ability to mount the image file. Since the image file format is file-based (and not bit-based like Symantec’s Ghost) you can mount it as read-only or read-write. Files can easily be extracted from it or added to it. No more needing to image a workstation, modify it, and then re-image it back when you want to make a change. New driver? Add it. new DLL? Add it. Simple as that. However, before you ...
After a few attempts and much frustration, yes I can say that you CAN install Virtual Server 2005 R2 on Windows Vista B2. I installed Vista Ultimate - July 2006 CTP I went into gpEdit.msc and turned off UAP (User Account Protection) - I found a blog online that indicated that this could interfere with the setup of VS 2005, and I have tried the installation with it on and I ran into the blue screen of death a couple of times. After disabling UAP - I did not have this issue. I found an excellent post ...

Microsoft released new CTP for .NET Framework 3.0. Download it here and this is for general public :). Overview The Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0 (formerly known as WinFX), is the new managed code programming model for Windows. It combines the power of the .NET Framework 2.0 with new technologies for building applications that have visually compelling user experiences, seamless communication across technology boundaries, and the ability to support a wide range of business processes. These new technologies ...
Much like it has for Vista, SQL and other technologies Microsoft TechNet has recently launched a community-style forum for Exchange Server 2007. However, at the moment it is short on volume and guidance. Every topic had more posts on Windows Vista issues than Exchange. I don't know what people are thinking, but hopefully a site admin will step up to clean out the discussion areas from off-topic posters and monitor how things progress. Please don't throw it out there and then abandon it. The power ...
Microsoft have  announced plans for a new version of Virtual PC - VPC 2007.  While we haven't gone into a great deal of detail about new features of VPC 2007, it will include support for Windows Vista as both a host and guest operating system.  It will also include support for 64-bit Vista as a host OS, and that VPC 2007 will have increased performance over VPC 2004. One of the new security features coming in Windows Vista and Longhorn is the new BitLocker™ Drive Encryption technology. BitLocker™ is designed to help prevent information loss, whether it is by theft or accidental. Information loss is costly to business on several levels, and the U.S. Department of Justice estimates that intellectual property theft cost enterprises $250 billion in 2004. BitLocker™ Drive Encryption gives you improved data protection on your notebooks, desktops, and servers by providing ...
I came across some excellent security initiatives that are being taken by Microsoft. One of this is having a secure and stable OS. You will notice that Windows Server 2003 is much more stable and secured then its predecessor operating systems. The next step towards having even more stable and secure environment is Vista. Vista is a new OS developed by Microsoft. It is currently in Beta 2. After Wndows 2003; Vista is going to be our next OS. Other than UI, Microsoft has heavily invested in Security ...
Microsoft developers have posted information on windows vista blog mentioning the reason for taking down the windows vista torrent that was posted by Chris and Jake recently. I personally agree with the most of the comments users have posted there, people downloading beta are not inexperienced end users but rather experienced developers. With that demographic in mind they could have easily stated the hash for the actual vista ISO in order for the users to verify their downloaded copy. I guess this ...
I have finally squeezed out a blogcast (done during my lunch break so it is rough – be kind please) and have it posted here. I plan on ramping up in the next one to two weeks, especially with some Exchange 2007 content. Below are some links to the content I reference in the blogcast. Enjoy. Ask the Experts: Windows Vista Disk Imaging with ImageX and Windows Imaging Format (WIM) Windows Vista deployment is based on disk imaging, and the operating system will come with a built-in disk-imaging ...

This is SUPER COOL! A great site full of videos that show the capability of Windows Vista - Northface and Mercedes (Under Engaging your Customers) are my favourite's.

Teched India 2006 in Hyderabad ended last evening with a gush of thrilled audience who experienced a full technology rain for two days. The turn out at the Shilparamam auditorium was packed with technology enthusiasts from various companies waiting to try their hands on the new technologies waiting to be shipped. This year, the primary focus were on two major milestones, Windows Vista, the next generation operating system from Windows and Office 2007, the coolest Office suite to have ever been shipped. ...
I recall a Channel 9 webcast on TOE as part of Windows Vista networking stack improvements, but guess DELL has gotten their hands on it now: “TOE A TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE), standard with every 9th Generation PowerEdge server, helps deliver greater network throughput and efficiency by offloading TCP/IP processing to a dedicated processor.” It is a free option if you pick to use the on-board Dual Broad-Com Gigabit adapters. Only works with Microsoft OS, of course ...
Dang, I really really wanted to run Windows Vista on my new Lenovo (formally IBM) Thinkpad T60. I installed it just fine and got all the drivers working, but I need three things in order for this to be my work laptop. One, I need Microsoft Outlook and that worked just fine. I need our work-based messaging program to work. It didn't at first, but you can run this program using the Program Compatibility Wizard and assign it to run in a Windows XP SP2 context. Then the last program I need is Nortel's ...
Kernel Transaction Manager (KTM) Before Vista, applications had to do a lot of hard work to recover from errors during the modification of files and registry keys. Windows Vista implements a generalized transaction manager called the Kernel Transaction Manager (KTM) which provides “all or nothing” transaction semantics. This means that changes are committed only when the associated transaction is completed and commits. The KTM is extensible through third-party resource managers and coordinates between ...
“Project Glidepath is both a website and blog and delivers a Visual Studio 2005 add-in called the Project Glidepath Software Factory. Using the Project Glidepath Software Factory you download "packages" of workflow-based guidance, code, content and templates that help you with many aspects of building Windows Vista applications as a MicroISV.” * * Quote from a blog post by Michael, the Microsoft cool founder of the site ...
Windows Vista is coming and will be here sooner than some might think. By now you have probably seen the graphical changes coming in Vista with the new Aero and Aero Glass user interfaces (and the associated hardware needed to support them) and heard all about the new user account controls in Vista that are designed to make the operating system more secure. But what about the “under-the-hood” changes in the Vista kernel? Lots of exciting changes in Windows Vista kernel are being made in the areas ...
I’ve written a windows exe which I think highlights the advantages of using generics, the sample features a stack type class called nsStack, the source code for which is :- namespace nsGenerics { class nsStack { private T[] m_ItemsArray; private int m_Index = 0; public const int MAX_SIZE = 5; public nsStack() { m_ItemsArray = new T[MAX_SIZE]; } public T Pop() { if (m_Index == 0) throw new System.InvalidOperationExce... is empty."); return m_ItemsArray[--m_Index]; } public void Push(T ...
Soma (VP of Dev Div, in simple one of the top guys working on next VS codenamed Orcas) announced few hours ago renaming WinFX to .NET Framewok 3.0. The announcement stated tat the rename has no technical effect on the components of WinFX/.NET Framework 3.0 components, just as you can see here: It also stated another rename for InfoCard christened now “Windows CardSpace“ (WCS). This is supposed to reduce developers' confusion about the versionning plan for WinFX/.NET 3.0. As you may expect, ...

Microsoft is doing a lot these days to tighten security in its software. This white paper enumerates the new features in Windows Vista that demonstrate this: http://download.microsoft.com/download/c/2/9/c2935f83-1a10-4e4a-a137-c1db829637f5/WindowsVistaSecurityWP.doc.
Microsoft yesterday announced its first release version to of a new proprietary specification to rival the widely used image format JPEG. According to Microsoft, its Windows Media Photo version 1.0 format surpasses what it terms the limitations of existing image formats. Convincing users to switch to its image format instead of JPEG is yet another demonstration of the way Microsoft has managed to keep its user base intact through platform lock-in. The current version of Windows Media Photo available ...

Microsoft has launched a Web site outlining the minimum hardware requirements for the next version of the Windows OS, Windows Vista. Apple hasn't announced its intentions for Vista and Boot Camp, but preliminary indications suggest that Intel-based Macs will make the cut. This comes less than a week before the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference (WinHEC) in Seattle. At the show, which kicks off Tuesday, Microsoft and hardware manufacturers are expected to show how Vista will run on a variety ...
I dont have the Clix yet so I can't tell if thats true (well I can't tell if its true anyway 'cause I conciously never bought an iPod) - but - CNet thinks so. A colleague of mine (Sean Alexander) pointed me out to these CNet articles - C|Net headline on Monday declared, “Awesome: WMP/Urge/Clix”. WMP11 Beta and MTV’s Urge service launched today w/a free two week trial. MP3 Insider wrote a good article as well entitled, “Ten Reasons to Love WMP11” The iRiver Clix, eeked ...

A top Microsoft engineer has thrown out a weekend challenge to the Windows Vista team: Find and fix a bug in the current code and earn $100. The employee who installs the latest Vista build at home and squashes the most bugs before Monday will get an extra $500. Brian Valentine issued the challenge Friday in an e-mail to members of the team working on Vista, the next update of the company's Windows operating system. The move comes as Microsoft is wrapping up work on a broad test version of Vista, ...
I’ve griped quite a bit in the past about Windows Vista and the beta process and it’s continuing feature-pruning. However, this is one feature that I’m really looking forward to seeing in action. One very cool feature of Windows Vista – especially for machines not natively equipped with the kind of horsepower to fully enjoy the rich visuals of Windows Presentation Foundation (Avalon) applications is ReadyBoost. ReadyBoost enables you to plug a USB key into your machine and ...
I’m starting to see more applications leveraging Aero Glass on Vista. They look quite cool. Here’s a couple of posts on getting Aero on WinForms and Windows Presentation Manager Tim Sneath : Windows Vista Aero Pt. 1 - Adding Glass to a Windows Forms Application Adam Nathan's Win32 to WinFX Blog : Aero Glass inside a WPF Window ...
I just got off of the phone with Verizon Wireless technical support. I was braced for the worst, especially hearing the horror stories when trying to get technical information on Treos and different mobile offerings. Boy was I surprised! The gentleman that helped me was knowledgeable, friendly and got me turned around in a short amount of time. I had trouble getting their PC Card software, VZ Access, to work under the latest build of Windows Vista (February CTP 5308). As it turns out, the software ...
The Tech*Ed website is now accepting submissions for the Birds of a Feather discussion sessions. If you have not experienced these before, they are a great time! Once all the submissions are in, attendees are encouraged to vote for their favorite sessions. These are not presentations, but “moderated” discussions in front of a white board where you are free to discuss whatever the group would like to that is relevant to the topic of that session. I hosted two BoF talks at last year’s ...

My analyst friend Rob Enderle says Windows Vista could match Linux and Unix for reliability, provided hardware vendors install error-correcting memory in their new, Vista-ready hardware. In this column, Enderle and I talk about what Microsoft has done to make Windows more reliable and how most crashes aren't even Microsoft's fault. Nevertheless, Redmond is working to stop all crashes and fixing memory problems is the new frontier. Microsoft Approaches Secure, Reliable Vista ...

Today things went pretty much different, and to the better. The keynote session turned into 3 keynotes. The first was given by Kareem Ramadan, the cool guy on top of all Microsoft Egypt. He spoke of the MDC as the 5th one, when people kept saying it was the 4th, just to know that there was another very first MDC turn, which most people didn’t know about! So, it was fun as you can see. He later said he was sorry that Bill Gates is not with us this year, and, said that they had 3000 registrations ...
NeoWin.com writes about how Windows Blackcomb changed its name to Windows Vienna. Windows Vienna is the successor of the Windows Vista operating system. The new codename was not officially confirmed by Microsoft, however Robert Scoble confirmed the rumour in a Channel9 topic. "The codename for Blackcomb has changed to 'Vienna'. This does not reflect a big change for us; we have used city code names in the past," a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. "These code names are derived from cities/locations ...
