I had an incredible time in Tulsa. Things were a bit rocky at first, because Google gave me some bad directions for Friday night, so I turned around about 4 times just to get the 11th street exist from highway 64. I was a little disappointed with the Doubletree Inn, so I'm sticking with Hampton Inn from now on. $20 for a burger and Ore Ida fries that I could make on my grill at home is insane. Some of the people were really nice at the hotel, but some were just flat out rude. When it was time to ...
As I noted earlier, I recently converted a Visual Studio 2005 solution with WCF clients to Visual Studio 2008. After making some additional changes and running the application, I started getting errors instantiating the WCF clients. The message -- that the contract for my WCF client couldn't be found in the list of endpoints in my config -- was unexpected since I re-created my WCF clients with the same name (and in the same namespace) as before. After a quick inquiry with my colleague (and brilliant ...
I fixed the error I posted about yesterday. I updated the post to say: Update: I had also uninstalled VS 2008 Team Suite trial, when I went to install VS 2008 For Developers, I didn't have enough space, which is why I had uninstalled VS 2005 in the first place. I freed up some space and installed VS 2008 and now all is working. Technorati tags: TeamBuild, MSB3147 ...
All of our projects that use TeamBuild are now being built with Visual Studio 2008, so to free up some much needed space on our server, I uninstalled Visual Studio 2005. Now all our builds are failing with the message: error MSB3147: Could not find required file 'setup.bin' in 'e:\b\Goldstar\gs_main\Sour... I found a thread on MSDN that suggested reinstalling the .NET SDK, so I'm trying that. Update: I had also uninstalled VS 2008 Team Suite trial, when ...
Microsoft recently announced a new version for BizTalk Server. It will be called BizTalk Server 2006 R3. Main aim of this version is to have parity with other related technologies and tools like .Net 3.5, VS 2008, SQL Server 2008 and WIN Server 2008. For more details: http://blogs.msdn.com/bizta... ...
If you're used to working with the VS 2005 Performance Tool (Dynamic Code Analysis) and you're starting to work on projects in VS 2008, you may have been a little surprised as I was running the VS 2008 version on existing code and getting different results than you get in VS 2005. By Default in a VS 2008 profiling session there is a check box called "Exclude Small Functions from Instrumentation" which is checked. You may need to uncheck it in order to get more complete results on your code. An example ...
April 30th Regina.NET and Regina IT Pro held the hereos community launch event. As far as I know, this was going to be the largest locally run (local speakers, facilities and sponsorship) IT community event. We booked 3 - 100 person classrooms and we had 3 speakers providing sessions that run concurrently, then repeated. The schedule looked like this Windows Server 2008; Room X SQL Server 2008; Room Y Visual Studio 2008; Room Z 6:30 AD, Hyper-V New Datatypes, Resource Governer LINQ, AJAX 7:30 AD, ...
Coming Friday, June 20th in Downers Grove, IL The Magenic Technology Summit is a full day of Magenic-provided training. We have lined up an impressive array of speakers and topics in two tracks, .NET development and Microsoft servers. And we have lined up two keynotes. Our first keynote speaker is Jay Schmelzer, who is the Group Program Manager for RAD tools. This basically means he runs the teams for all the Visual Studio designers and related RAD tools. He’s an excellent speaker and should provide ...
As errors go I found this one is pretty horrific. I got the error deploying a windows service written in .net 3.5 from my Vista x86 dev rig, to a 2003 x86 server. Only having the .NET runtime installed on the server I wrapped the service up in a deployment project. The service installed fine, however when trying to start the service I got a "The service did not respond in a timely manner" error. Initially, like you would, I thought there was probably an error with my code in the OnStart method, but ...
Today Microsoft unveils RoboChamps (www.robochamps.com), a simulated robotics league that is open to academics, hobbyists and developers from around the world, that demonstrates the power of the Microsoft platform to enable a broad range of developers to explore new ways to use .NET for robotics programming. RoboChamps is built on top of the Microsoft Robotics Developer Studio(MSRDS) 2008 CTP, and uses that product’s robust, physics enabled simulation environment to remove the barriers of entry that ...
First off it rocked...Special thanks to Lee Brandt, Blake Thiess, Joe Loux, Timothy Wright, and John Alexander. These guys were my teammates and what I would consider some of my new friends. They are some of the best band-mates a girl could ask for in Rockband also. So here is a little bit of my experience in general: I was looking forward to this event for a month. I was incredibly excited, because I love helping a good cause and felt like I had not done enough to give back to the community. I love ...
This was done using ASP.NET 3.5 in VS 2008. I had an application that I was using an Ajax TabContainer and TabPanels. The tabs looked great but I had wanted to change the background color of the tab body to a standard color my company uses. I took the default /*XP Theme*/ styles from Tabs.css and put them in my own CSS file. On the TabContainer I set the CssClass=”tabBackground” (tabBackground was the name I gave the class in my CSS file). I changed the background-color in .ajax_tab_body and everything ...

The SQL Server 2008 CTPs came out after Visual Studio 2008 was released. There's a compatibility issue when you try to open a database connection to SQL 2008 from the VS 2008 designer tool. You may receive the following error message: “This server version is not supported. Only servers up to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 are supported.” This happens when you select the the server, the database, and then click on "Add" to create the database connection. Fortunately, Microsoft released a CTP to address ...
What is new in Visual Studio 2008 A quick list of some of the new features are: Multi-Targeting support Web Designer and CSS support ASP.NET AJAX and JavaScript support Project Designer Data LINQ – Language Integrated Query The features listed and explained in this paper are not complete and this document intends to give you a forehand to start off with VS 2008. 1. UPDATE: I see a lot of comments which make me feel that this post has been useful. There have been a lot of queries also around the inability to find the download link. For the benefit of those, I am posting direct link here Download Mobile Web Form Templates for Visual Studio 2008 Now, for some for information around why it has been missing Visual Studio releases. According to Omar Khan from the Web Development Tools team, ASP.NET Mobile Webforms are really only useful for last generation ‘WAP’ ...
I am hooked on ReSharper, and when I started using VS 2008 with ReSharper, I was feeling the pain with version 3.1. I would go back and forth between turning it off so I could access my Linq methods and avoid having ReSharper reformat my code into a nice mess, and turning it on so I could have it fix my usings and reformat my code nicely. I have been using ReSharper 4.0 pre-release version for a few weeks now, and it's working out pretty good. I only have to turn it off once in a while now. The lambda ...

Karen Corby provides us 3 SL2 controls, Carlos Figueira details the cross-domain policy file, Jesse Liberty starts a great tutorial sequence on data in SL2, Shawn Wildermuth on a VS2008 SL2 crash and workaround plus a pointer to a DeepZoom MSLabs site, and Michael Schwarz discusses SL2 and Sockets. From SilverlightCream.com, and I think I'm caught up finally! Re-usable SL2 Controls I blogged about Karen Corby's VlikrViewr last night, but the fact that she has 3 controls that we can use all zipped ...
I know I'm a little slow in doing so, but today I finally sat down and went through all the Silverlight 2.0 Beta 1.0 Templates. I was incredibly impressed with some of it and sorely disappointed with other parts. Everyone has said it is really easy to use this technology and I agree. I have a little PhotoShop experience from my web design days. I have dabbled in some animated gifs, Flash Creations, PDF Creations, Corel Draw, Paint .Net, and who knows what else. I opened up the VS 2008 Template and ...
I was looking at the site Visual Studio Gallery at what was available as plug-ins for the new VS2008. Here are some that I know are cool and others that looked rather promising: PowerCommands for VS2008 This seems to be the most viewed one and it does add a lot of quick and easy commands to your right-click menus. Commands include quite a few include Open Containing Folder and Open Command Prompt. Nice one. Source Code Outliner Look at your code in a treeview to easily access methods, properties, ...

Just installed the runtime and Silverlight Tools for Visual Studio 2008. You can find the necessary tools here. The beta 1 now has a good set of controls including Data Grid, cool! To run the Silverlight 1.1 Alpha projects in Beta 1, you need to manually modify few things. First, if you try to open the old projects in VS 2008 after installing the latest bits, you will get the following error message: "Unable to read the project file '... .csproj'. ... The imported project "C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\Vis... ...

If you ever encountered any of the problems with Visual Studio 2008 listed below, you might want to apply the latest path to your VS 2008. Bugs in HTML Source View performance • In Visual Studio 2008, you have a page that contains an ActiveX control. The ActiveX control has more than two levels of subproperties. When you type inside the page, the source editor stops responding for several seconds. • The View Code command in Visual Studio 2008 is not available for a long time. • When you open large ...
As much as I have enjoyed playing with the Entity Framework (Beta 3), I will be uninstalling shortly after this post. The fact of the matter is, my company is not prepared to go to production in a couple of months with something that hasn't seen a lot of action. The EF certainly seems stable enough, but, I can respect this decision. The good news is that we are still using VS 2008 & .Net 3.5. Also, my plan is to maintain a design that we can migrate to the EF without too much effort. Hopefully ...
For those who couldn't make the VS 2008/SQL 2008/Server 2008 launch in Birmingham in March, we have dates for the MSDN Roadshow in April around the UK. I'd register now if you're interested as these events sell out really fast. Here's the Microsoft blurb; Now the roadshow is coming to a city near you A short while ago you expressed interest in the MSDN Roadshow, which means you're now one of the first to hear that registration is open. We're anticipating high demand, so you'll need to act fast before ...
Another great meeting!!! Tonight I walked in with Bill; I got to help push the mounds of food and drinks in. As usual the meeting was held at the Microsoft Malvern campus. The meeting started with Dani Diaz our local MS rep. His course was named VS c# Tips and Tricks for the MS Visual Studio 2008 IDE. Dani started out with showing us around VS 2008, key commands, explaining the versioning and how it works, etc. Some of the key commands that he showed were pretty cool, ones I never saw before. Then ...
The Problem In an N-tier application, you keep your logic in a business logic tier, typically a different VS project that can be used from a website, a windows service, or desktop application, and that should be valid to writ unit tests against on its own. But how about if your requirements say that you need to to upload some file for the business logic to work? Think of a scanned image (signed contract maybe?) or just a comma separated value file containing some emails. Typically the business logic ...

The slidedeck, VS 2008 project files, and GoingGolfing database files (.mdb and .ldb) for my Implementing Virtual Earth With ASP.NET 2.0 session that I presented at the Raleigh Code Camp this weekend have been uploaded to the TakeNote Technologies website.

Thanks for everyone who attended and asked some great questions!

Enjoy!

Have a day. :-|

Sometimes, you just have to get get it done. I have gotten sick of all the TONS of documents being generated on requirements for the project on which I am working. I am required to be a manual tester, and I am already pretty tired of that. Then, the requirements started coming in....OMG! Being a diligent tester (and for traceability), I have been entering those requirements in Quality Center. It's just gotten to be a big job, so I fired up Visual Studio, determined to ease my burden. I wanted something ...

Just want to make sure everyone saw this from Scott Gu today One of the things we are trying to do with VS 2008 is to more frequently release public patches that roll-up bug-fixes of commonly reported problems. Today we are shipping a hot-fix roll-up that addresses several issues that we've seen reported with VS 2008 and Visual Web Developer Express 2008 web scenarios. Hot Fix Details You can download this hot-fix roll-up for free here (it is a 2.6MB download). Below is a list of the issues it fixes: ...
Adding references to WCF services is trivially easy with Visual Studio 2008, but if you're still working with 2005 there are a few things that need to be considered when referencing WCF services instead of using Add Web Reference. The following step-by-step is meant to help particularly those who have not developed WCF services but just need to consume them. It applies to both, VS 2005 and VS 2008. Prerequisite installs for Visual Studio 2005 If you are in a library, console, or Windows forms project, ...
I've got from web designers HTML prototype, that I have to implement in ASP.NET web site. Just including the whole HTML with CSS and JS files didn't work well, because the CSS files had global settings, that corrupt existing layout. So I had to comment and modify CSS selectors to adapt th the site. Not an easy task, because I am not expert in CSS and it took a time to understand quite large set of CSS rules, that the designers used. Excellent presentation from Damian Edwards at RDN about CSS based ...
*Moved to: TFS Event Handler (Prototype) RefreshI found a couple of bugs in the TFS Event Handler Prototype release. As I am still supporting this release (many people use it in production) I have fixed the bugs and uploaded new installers. The config files have not changed, so you should make a copy of your config file before you uninstall the application. Then reinstall it and copy the config files back and you will be sorted. I have this version working on a server and sending emails with the ...
I knew it's there all over the web, and people are still asking, so, let's go through it together! Most simple Visual Studio 2005 add-ins could actually work with Visual Studio 2008. I'm not talking about huge add-ins like Resharper here, but most of the small utilities we find online. If you really want to keep using your add-in, and it doesn't provide a VS 2008 version yet, and you didn't have VS 2005 installed on the machine when you installed VS 2008 (as it tries to migrate the add-in when you ...
I have Visual Studio 2005 environment and decided to try VS 2008. I've read some articles(e.g. here) about site-by-site installation and had an impression, that making a copy of solution is enough. NOTE: If you are using TFS, before conversion of the existing solution, obtain and install Team Explorer Client . VS 2005 is using TFS Source Control, but VS 2008 shows no Source Control plug-in installed. . After installing of VS 2008 I've copied my existing solution as MySolution2008 and opened it in ...
Inspired by Scott Hanselman and his relation from Visual Studio 2008 InstallFest in Portland Polish user groups started the series of events in Poland. First such event was organized by Szymon Kobalczyk in Kraków and you can read about it on his blog. I was one of the organizers of the event so I cannot tell I liked it because I loved it. It was a huge fun for me. I believe it was a great success. At the moment there was a second InstallFest in Wroclaw. I was there, and I think it was also well organized. ...
*Moved to: TFS Event Handler CTP1 ReleasedI have just released a new version of the TFS Event Handler. This is a really rough version and you should not be used in a production environment. Event handler system will work in this version, but a manual config is required, and the user interface is a bit flaky. Also all errors that occur in an individual handlers are ignored.Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...
Last night was the first user group meeting of 2008, and it was my first meeting - I have blogged about it before, just being the socially inept loner that I am!!, I just haven't got round to going. The presentation was on Test Driven development TDD (Another post coming on that!) from a guy called Craig Murphy - this is a really interesting subject to me as we adopt TDD as best we can, it does however sometimes gives way to deadlines!! It was reassuring to see that we go about TDD in the right way ...
Scott Guthrie[MSFT] announced the availability of .NET fx 3.5 library source code as promised. (Setup and how to use) Quote from the announcement: Specifically, you can now browse and debug the source code for the following .NET Framework libraries: .NET Base Class Libraries (including System, System.CodeDom, System.Collections, System.ComponentModel, System.Diagnostics, System.Drawing, System.Globalization, System.IO, System.Net, System.Reflection, System.Runtime, System.Security, System.Text, System.Threading, ...
*Moved to: TFS Event Handler RevisitedAs I now have a TFS server in the office and we have Go-Live on 1st February I will be revisiting the TFS Event Handler prototype. I think there is too much work in the main code to get it working, but I should be able to rework the Prototype for Visual Studio 2008 and Team Foundation Server 2008. Hopefully this will not be much work...Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...
I've encountered a problem trying fix the WCF / WPF Visual Studio 2005 Integration components after I've installed Visual Studio 2008. Installing a VS 2008 will install .NET 3.0 SP1 and remove the installation of .NET 3.0. When trying to install the WCF / WPF Extension, installation display's a message Setup has detected that a prerequisite is missing. To use Visual Studio 2005 extensions for .NET Framework 3.0 (WCF & WPF), November 2006 CTP you must have the .NET Framework 3.0 runtime installed. ...
Now, this is freaking awesome. Testing your ASP.NET pages using Ruby code. I used to test my ASP.NET pages using NUnitASP which was pretty decent. But, I am not sure what happened after I installed VS 2008 the NUnitASP simply stopped working. Anyway, I needed a tool to test my ASP.NET pages. These pages typically include DropDownList, TextBoxes, Checkboxes and stuff. If you had to test them manually then it would take you a long time plus it is really boring. So, I came across this interesting post ...
