*Moved to: Office 2010 gotcha 2: Visual Studio 2008 LocksI am having a little problem with Visual Studio 2008 that only started after I had installed Office 2010. I found this interesting post on Visual Studio 2008 Locks or Freezes in ASPX from Rinat Abdullin that was a complete match to the problem I am having. Basically VS just bings at you whenever you click anywhere as if there is a model dialog open after opening and trying to edit an aspx file.Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...
In this post, I will explain you how can we show Loading message in asp.net ajax without using Update Progress. Now some one may asked, why do I want to skip Update Progress ? Well, there can be several reasons for this, fist of all you have to work on every single page, and on every update panel to get the update progress working. There are basically three methods of meeting this requirement. Using Master Pages : A very smart way, but not all of us are using them .. right ? Extending Page Class ...
I recently installed a third party control and it had an option to add the control to my Visual Studio toolbox. When it installed the control to my toolbox, I noticed that the "Open / Create Website" option on the Start Page was missing. I tried everything from repairing the install to uninstalling and installing VS 2008 all over again. Nothing worked, but then a saw a comment on resetting the VS settings. For some, it may not be an option but I had only a few custom settings which I could change ...
Not long ago I notice interesting “feature” of WCF REST, hosted in the IIS7: when size of data from client exceeds some value, service broke the connection. I created test service, where I could reproduce this issue, using WCF REST Starter Kit (you can download here actual release, Preview 2). One of service's method is: [WebHelp(Comment = "Sample description for DoWork")] [WebInvoke(UriTemplate = "DoWork", Method = "POST")] [OperationContract] public SampleResponseBody DoWork(SampleRequestBody request) ...
Hi, typical project teams have a build environment to streamline the production and release of the various versions of their application or product. In many project, there is more than just the needed application that gets built in this environment. One very common thing that those environments often build is a toolbox or other kind of shared libraries. This article will hopefully help you setup an even better environment than the one you actually have or shall I say a more complete one… This post ...

I finally had a chance to install VS2010 Beta 1.Full instruction on how to here VS2010 has undergone a major overhaul since VS 2008, a peek are some of the cool new eye candy can be found here I've been waiting to get my hands on the TPL/PLINQ stuff and the Beta was definitely worth the wait. In a previous post we talked about using asynchronous actions for performing long running operations. I was anxious to see how the new TPL stuff would help in achieving the same thing. Interestingly enough, ...
The LiveMeeting Q&A session with ScottGu was, as usual, very exciting. As promised, here are some of the highlights from his answers. Microsoft’s Development Process In terms of the development process at Microsoft, Scott said that more projects will be developed with openness, transparency, more frequent releases, relying on customers’ feedback and with OSI open source licenses as in the case of ASP.NET MVC. Silverlight In regards to Silverlight 3 release date, it might be around the July 10th. ...
You might get entangled while reinstalling SQL Server 2008 on a PC where VS 2008 has already been installed before. Simple way to resolve this scenario is to install VS 2008 SP1 on the machine. Various routes which can be taken are: · Install Visual Studio 2008 SP1 before you install SQL Server 2008 OR · Uninstall Visual Studio 2008, and then install SQL Server 2008. After SQL Server 2008 is installed, you can install Visual Studio 2008, and then install Visual Studio 2008 SP1. OR Do not install ...

Background : In my last post about SQL Server 2008 new feature File Stream (Saving and Retrieving File Using FileStream SQL Server 2008), we did an example of saving an image to the file stream and then retrieve it back and make it available for download. The result of that example looks like as below. But, one has to press the button to download the image file. One of my blog reader raise a point that he wants to display the same image instead of Get File button which is going to download. Introduction ...
*Moved to: Solution to connecting to TFS using HTTPS over the Internet from behind ISAThis problem it seams is to do with the way Visual Studio 2010 connects to your TFS server over HTTPS. The default value for “BypassProxyOnLocal” in Visual Studio 2008 was “False”, but it has been changed to “True” for Visual Studio 2010 Beta 1. It should be noted that this is currently a Beta 1 workaround and this behaviour may be updated for Beta 2 and RTM. You can fix this by adding the following registry keys ...

So, it takes too long for me to write this post. even though I completed the coding stuff a week back but it is really hard to manage time these days. In this post, I will explain and demonstrate you how to create custom paging in Grid view control. Paging which works like the Google Paging. Let me elaborate more, say for example you have a record set of 500 items and you want to display 10 items per page. Now what happen to the pages numbers. Either you use the default with “..” sign after 10th ...
*Moved to: Multi-Targeting in Visual Studio 2010We thought that we had it good in Visual Studio 2008, being able to target .NET 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5, but in reality they were all running on the .NET 2.0 Runtime, just with a different set of available libraries. Well Visual Studio 2010 take it that little bit further by being able to target .NET 2.0, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0. Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...

Last week I needed to completely reset my surface unit back to factory settings due to erratic behavior (mostly in VS 2008). I followed the docs on the process Microsoft released in their SDK, but I had a couple of hiccups I thought I would share with you. 1. When you restart your surface you will want to hit your delete key once a second when the bios screen appears. Then when that screen changes you will want to hit F8. For some reason I had difficulty timing these key strokes. 2. you will need ...

I might have to develop an application for a mobile scanning device and I have been playing around with the .NET mobile components in preparation. Not easy at all: the documentation is not very clear and there are lots of different components/versions. Here are some of the problems I encountered and how I solved them. My constraints: a) My development environment is Windows Vista + VS 2008 Team System. b) The device will probably be Datalogic Memor which runs Windows CE 5.0. This means I need to ...

One of the coolest features I've found in Visual Studio (currently VS 2008 Standard) is the ability to add custom tokens for the Task List. In this example, I've added the "WAS" token that is used when I've changed some code and want to test it before actually deleting the old code. I usually just comment out the old code and go delete it later. If that deletion is delayed for any reason, when I re-open the code, the tokens in the tasks help me remember what I was doing. The WAS tag is used for old/unused ...
Today, when I was planning to write an article on Grid View. I got a message from a very good friend of mine who is asking to disable the special keys(Windows Keys) in his application. When I start researching on it, I was thinking that it can be done using e.KeyChar but unfortunately, it is not showing any information about windows keys. So in this post I will explain you, how can we disable the special keys (in our case windows keys) in C# Application. 1. Crete a c# windows application project ...
I few months back, I was having major problems with VS 2008 crashing on me left and right. After trying numerous things to resolve my problem, I finally decided to uninstall all of the .Net Frameworks and VS, then reinstall. My problems started shortly after I installed SP1 (both .Net Framework and VS 2008). I can’t say for certain that SP1 was causing my problems, but since then (after reinstalling without the service packs), I have not experienced the crashing. There are other reasons that I wanted ...
When ASP.NET page converted to WAP, it changed autoeventwireup to True- see autoeventwireup Changed to True in C# Conversion to WAP discussion. Autoeventwireup is easier for coding, but there are disadvantages(according to MSDN): One disadvantage of the AutoEventWireup attribute is that it requires that the page event handlers have specific, predictable names. This limits your flexibility in how you name event handlers. Another disadvantage is that performance is adversely affected, because ASP.NET ...
One of our developers used ConditionedActivityGroup activity with a single branch. ConditionedActivityGroup is a kind do of loop, but it should not be used instead of the WhileActivity. There are a few reasons for this: 1.Use the simplest tool that satisfy your requirement 2.workflow designer doesn't expand body of ConditionedActivityGroup, and you need to click it to Preview 3. If you have many activities in the workflow, the designer becomes terribly slow(VS 2008) The huge workflows should be considered ...
FileStream data type is a very important feature of SQL Server 2008 and gradually getting popular amongst developer for it’s feasibility. And in the past few days specially after “Configure SQL Server 2008 for File Stream” post. This is on the request of some of my readers to show how effective Asp.net menu control is by using CSS Control Adapter. Most of the folks either have no idea of what CSS Adapter is or have some problem in integrating that with their applications. While using Membership API, It is a very normal task to send user a registration or verification email. We can achieve that using two ways one is using the default email setting of Create User Control and other is by implementing CreateUserWizard.CreatedUser event Method 1: Drag and Drop the create user control, right click then properties and find MailDefination and set appropriate values for each property. BodyFileName is basically the location of the file which contains the body of the email. ...
TFS has a wonderful feature whereby it marks files as changed, even though there are no changes. These files show up in the Pending Changes window in Visual Studio (VS 2008). To work around this, add the following external command to your VS tools: First you need to install TFS Power Tools In VS go into Tools - External Tools and click Add Enter the following details: Title: Unchange Command: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Team Foundation Server 2008 Power Tools\tfpt.exe Arguments: uu /recursive /noget ...
I came across this the other day. I recently converted a .NET 1.1 project to .NET 2.0 using VS 2008 and during development testing a collegue had complained that he had been getting errors updating columns in a DataSet. The error was that the column was ReadOnly, so therefore could not update it. I eventually tracked it down to the data coming from SQL Server 2000 database, some of the fields where not directly coming from columns in the database. Some where results from functions like IsNull and ...

Issue 1: Remote Debug You can't remotely debug an application from Visual Studio 2008 when the installed debugger on the remote (target) machine is from the Visual Studio 2005 install. You must install the Visual Studio 2008 remote debugger on the target computer to attach to the remote debugger from the Visual Studio 2008 IDE. I believe side-by-side installation of the VS 2005 and VS 2008 remote debugger is fine. However, I don't believe they can run concurrently. Issue 2: MSTest If you try to run ...
[Source: http://geekswithblogs.net/E... The first public beta of BizTalk Server 2009 was released yesterday, and fulfils expectations by falling in line with the 2008 server and development stack, and offering a few functional extras. I've had a quick run through of it and made some initial notes below. The MSBuild integration is interesting although I haven't got a good grasp yet on whether it will replace custom MSBuild tasks to aid deployment; apparently it works nicely with TFS, but ...
Over the last few weeks I’ve been working on implementing a Geneva Framework based STS that supports both active and passive scenarios. This is progressing very well and I already have a fairly solid PoC running for both scenarios. Generally, to make any web site participate in the federated identity “dance” all it takes is some configuration on the application’s web.config (separate post coming shortly), but up until today I have only done so for web applications developed as a .net 3.5 project. ...

So I decided it was time to take a few minutes this week and discuss what I learned this week. This moral is not really something new it's more a reiteration. I hate third party features with little to no documentation. I like developing my own products and knowing what I am doing. I was working with some big name third party feature and I felt like an idiot. First off I had to contact them to get an older version of the product. Some guy with a name like Frankenstein's henchman contacted me. If ...
I encountered a repeatable crash in VS2008 for the first time today. I was working on a C# file in the editor. SP1 added some design time hints on syntax or potential compile time problems. The code I was working on had a few red squiggly lines letting me know that I should correct something. Well, when I tried to edit one particular line, VS would freeze on me then throw a nice "Sorry, I'm crashing" error dialog and then close. VS has crashed on me before, but that has typically been because something ...

I've created the MyTableClass CSS class(stored in .CSS file) and specified it to a HTML table. .MyTableClass { font-size: 8pt; } However the size of font inside the table was bigger than I specified. Thanks to VS 2008 CSS properties pane - Applied Rules section I was able to find that the rule was overridden by TD element style TD { font-size: 12px; } It was not hard to create hack to override global TD. .MyTableClass TD { font-size: 8pt; } I feel that having global element rule is not a good idea. ...
I just installed .net 3.5 sp1, vs 2008 sp1 and thus got access to the latest version of the entity framework. Since I hadn't played with it before, I decided to try. My scenario was more than simple, bordering on lame: save some data in one table in a sql compact database. So I quickly generated the .edmx using the wizard (which is pretty cool btw) and just ran the app. Unfortunately, when the ObjectContext derived class would be instantiated, i got the following FileNotFoundException: "Could not ...
That is, don't use Cassini in your development environment if you aren't planning to use it in production. For example, my customer is running IIS on their server. Why shouldn't I do the same? With what I have seen with Cassini, there is no reason. Cassini is great, but there are noticeable differences between it and IIS. I am using a third party menu that performs poorly through Cassini, but works fine on IIS. Others have documented differences in behavior with Cassini. Scott Lilly describes a couple ...
